If you set password for mobile memory card, then you should be not forget the password. If you does then the only option is to formate your memory card with the help of the card reader and eventually the loss of all your data stored on it. There is a way to break the security wall. If you are a Symbian device lover then no need to worry about the password. You can crack them in few minutes.

In this tutorial I am going to teach you how to reset your memory card password in easy step. Before we start you need to have X-plore (application used to explore your system files and folder even the hidden folders in your device)

Step1: Install X-Plore in your mobile. If you want to download X-Plore search around internet you can download free trail.

Step2: Open your X-plore apps and Press 0(Zero) and check which you have marked the "show the system files"

Step3: Once you done that now go to the following path C:/Sys/Data/Mmcstore

Step4: Once you reached there you need to press "3" under option to set it in the Hex-viewer

Step5: See the third column you will able to see a line of code ! TMSD02G (c??"?x???6?2?6?2?6). Just check the character between the "?" it is your password ie: 62626

Note: If you have not set the password, then you will not able to gain access to C:/Sys/Data

sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5102069488082505221.post-45253598104950764032011-12-27T09:17:00.000-08:002011-12-27T09:17:10.143-08:00What is Android?

Android is a Linux based open source operating system which has JAVA library (similar to SE). Part 1

WARNING: Using secret codes may be harmful to your phone and result in disabling or worse. Use these codes at your own discretion, we accept no responsiblility for blocked pones while using these codes!!!

IMEI Number
*#06# Cells Identity Code (IMEI = International Mobile Equipment Identity)
XXXXXX XX XXXXXX X
TAC FAC SNR SP

TAC = Type Approval Code (first 2 digits = country code of the approval-country )
FAC = Final Assembly Code: (01,02 = AEG)
(10,20 Nokia)
(40,41,44 Siemens)
(30 Ericsson)
(50 Bosch)
(51 Sony,Siemens,Ericsson)
(60 Alcatel)
(65 AEG)
(70 Sagem)
(75 Dancall)
(80 Philips)
(85 Panasonic)

SNR = Serial Nr.

SP = Spare (always "0")

Software Version
*#0000# shows the software version

Signal Processing
*3370# - Enchanced full Rate Codec (EFR) activation. It will automatically restart.
#3370# - Enchanced full Rate Codec (EFR) deactivation
*4720# - Half Rate Codec activation. It will automatically restart.
#4720# - Half Rate Codec deactivation

Enchanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (AlgebraicCode Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about 5%

Sim Clock Stopping
*#746025625#
[*#sim0clock#]

Checks if the sim clock can be stopped. Sim clock stop is a kind of stand-by mode which will save battery time. This code doesn't work with software version 4.59.

It will tell you if it can be stopped or not.

Warrenty Menu
*#92702689# takes you to a secret menu with 6 choices:
[*#war0anty#]

1. Displays Serial Number.
2. Displays the Month and Year of Manufacture (0997).
3. Displays (if there) the date where the phone was purchased (MMYY).
4. Displays the date of the last repairment - if found (0000).
5. Makes you capable of transferring user data if you have the gear for it.
6. Shows how long the phone has been used to talk. This counter is not reset by when you "clear timers" like the counters in the call register.

Bypass the SP lock With a Nokia 16xx/21xx/31xx/51xx/81xx
1. Insert SIM card of different provider.
2. Turn on the phone and press the UP VOLUME key for 3 sec.
Then release it and the phone says PIN CODE?
3. Press the "C" key.
4. Then Press * and wait until it disappears and appears again, then press * one more time and 04*PIN*PIN*PIN#

Nokia Speed Trap Detector Urban Legend spread by Nokia Engineers ;^)
The settings for radar speed traps detector. Your Nokia cell phone can be programmed to pick up radar speed traps, when programmed your cell phone picks up the radar and alerts you on the message alert tone. ( Doesn't work with Nokia 7110! )
1. Enter your menu
2. Select settings
3. Select security settings
4. Select closed user group
5. Select on
6. Enter 00000
7. Press ok
8. Clear back to normal, within a few seconds your phone will display a radar sign with five zero's next to it. It is now activated.

Unfortunately only Nokia phones have this function. The Cell Phone info display needs to be de-activated. Settings -> Phone Settings -> Cell Info display. Each time you turn off your phone, or even each time you loose contact with your carrier, you'll have to activate it again... It is done using steps 1 through 5 above, but the number (00000) will be already on the field as a default.

The James Bond Trick
If you short-circuit the left middle and right pins on the bottom of the phone with all connections touching each other, the Nokia software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this just activate the "Automatic Answer" in the headset profile and set the ringing volume to "Mute". Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Just place it under a table in a room and call it. The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are saying!
Part 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Network Monitor
There is a hidden menu inside your Nokia phone. If you want to activate it, you'll have to re-program some chips inside of your phone.
Check your software version. You can only continue if you have v4.33, v4.73 or v5.24.
Take apart the phone.
De-solder the EEPROM (ATMEL AT 24C64)
Read out the data with an EEPROM programmer and save it to a file (Backup)
If you have v.33 or v4.73, change the address "03B8" from "00" to "FF"
If you have v5.24 then change the address "0378" from "00" to "FF"
Write the new data to the EEPROM and solder it back to the phone
Power on your phone and you should have "Netmonitor" enabled.
The Network Monitor gives you the following information:
Carrier number, MS RX Level in DBM, Received signal quality, MS TX power level, C1 (Path loss criterion, used for cell selection and reselection). The range is -99 to 99, RTL (Radio link timeout), Timeslot, Indication of the transmitter status, Information on the Network parameters, TMSI (Temporary Mobile Subscriber Identity), Cell identification (Cell ID, Number of cells being used), MCC (Mobile country code), MCN (Mobile network code), LAC (Location area code), Ciphering (On/Off), Hopping (On/Off), DTX (On/Off), Discard cell barred information.

Game Hacking with Blizzard
Get the file called the 'BlizzardN-GAGE.SIS' from IRC get in #mediaplace on Efnet (note: Downloading cracked/Hacked games is illegal unless you already own a copy of game)
The Blizzard Nokia N-Gage Installer.
1. Unpack Blizzard.sis file that you get from mIRC
2. Transfer the .sis file to your N-Gage
3. Get the .blz (N-gage ROM) from mIRC
4. copy the file to the root dir of your MMC (16MB MMC)Multimedia Card
5. Use the Blizzard application to unpack the .blz file
6. After unpacking the sonic icon should appeared in the MENU
7. Clicked sonic icon and it should work !
GSM Network Services Command Strings
When various network functions are selected via the cellphone's menu using the keypad, the cellphone automatically generates the corresponding GSM network command string and transmits it to the network. These commands can however be manually entered via the keypad.

Each command is prefixed with either one or two * or # characters as follows:
** Register and Activate
* Activate
## De-Register (and Deactivate)
# Deactivate
*# Check Status
© Call button

Once each command has been entered, if it is a network command (as opposed to a local handset command) it must be transmitted to the network by pressing the YES (receiver) key which acts as an enter key - this is represented here with the © character. Always enter numbers in full international format +CountryAreaNumber (e.g. +447712345678).
Revealing Headphone and Car-Kit Menus
Think about this: If you do these tricks the new menus can not be erased after the procedure. But it's not dangerous or harmful for your phone To enable the headset-function, you have to short-circuit the "3" and "4". After a short time there is "Headset" on the display Now, menu 3-6 is now enabled! To enable the carkit-function you have to short-circuit the "4" and "5". After a short time, "Car" is shown on the display and the menu 3-7 is enabled!!
This Trick is for you how want to hear more then your supposed to!
If you short-circuit the left and the right contact with the middle contact ("3", "6" and "9") the Nokia Software hangs! The profile "Headset" will be activated. Before you do this, just active the "auto call receive" function in the headphone profile and set the ringing volume to "mute" Now you can use your phone for checking out what people are talking about in a room. Place the phone somewhere stratidic and call your phone! The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to what people are talking about! .....gr8...
Adding NEW Ring Tones
Set SMSC to +358405202999 (Smart Messaging)
Senf a SMS to 99999 with the word TONES in the message
When you get the reply, edit the message so that the tone that you want does not have a asterisk in front of it. Now send the message to 99999. The phone will display NEW RINGTONE RECEIVED.
Turning on Car Kit and Head Set Menus (Cannot be turned off)
To enable the headset-function, you have to short-circuit the "3" and "4". After a short time there is "Headset" on the display Now, menu 3-6 is now enabled!
To enable the carkit-function you have to short-circuit the "4" and "5". After a short time, "Car" is shown on the display and the menu 3-7 is enabled!!
Place the phone somewhere under a table in this room and call your phone! The phone receives the call without ringing and you can listen to the words these people are talking about!
As you can imagine. YOU CAN DESTROY YOUR NOKIA BY FOOLING AROUND WITH THESE CONNECTIONS. Therefore I accept NO responsibility for any possible damages. My advise to you is to think twice before doing something and if you are going to try make use of a car-kit holder to get access to the X100 connector since it is to tiny to use a self-fashioned connector. IT IS POSSIBLE TO REPROGRAM THE NOKIA 2110 as is indicated by the pinout description so watch it !

DTMF Programming
If you dial in to a service number which requires DTMF strings after you have dialled in, you can program the whole sequence. What you do is:

Key in the number.
Press the * three times: a 'p' appears (pause).
Key in the DTMF code, you can use 'p' again in this string.
Store this in memory.
If you select the memory place, and dial the stored number, the mobile will wait a few seconds (pause) and then send the string as DTMF.
Another option is to press the * four times: a 'w' appears (wait). When the 'w' is reached in the callstring, 'DTMF' appears at the left menu button. When you press the left menu button the mobile starts sending DTMF.
Carkit Programming
If you use a carkit with handsfree AND additional handset, and you want to switch from handset to handsfree:

Press the left menu button, and put the additional handset on hook.
Now you are on handsfree.
Interesting thing to try
As you may know, 2110i supports Call Cost Limit function which means that you can limit the maximum of calls from your phone. This function has a feature that it shows the remaining credits in the third row of the display. It should decrease every time you make a call, but if your operator doesn't support this yet, you can display your phone number or anything else there.

And how to do this? First, go to the "DURATION AND COST" menu. Select "CALL COSTS LIMIT". The phone asks you the PIN2-code, you should get it from your operator. After entering PIN2, select "Set". Phone asks you "Limit:". Enter maximum of seven numbers you want to be visible on display, for example my phone number is 0405100210, so I enter 5100210. So these numbers will be last numbers on display.

And then go to back to the "DURATION AND COST" menu. Select "SHOW COST IN". Enter the PIN2-code. Select "Currency". Enter "Unit price:", I recommend setting it "1". Phone asks you "Currency unit:" Enter the maximum of three numbers or letters or symbols you want to be visible as first numbers/letters/ symbols on display. I entered "040".

Now you are ready. Quit the menu and the number should be on the third row of the display! So, on my display, the last row of the display says 0405100210. It stays there even if you switch off your phone. (Of course it disappears while
you dial a number or use the menu etc.)
That is because on most mobile phones, the network recognises that it is your phone calling in and makes life more convenient for you.

So you would never even think that someone could access your voicemail by just dialling a number and entering a well-known default PIN.

These PINs can be found across the web – they naturally needed to be publicised to customers so they knew how to get remote access if they wanted.

As you’re probably thinking right now, this is a really poor security measure. Although the use of default PINs appears to have been brought to a halt in the UK, if you live in another country, it might be worth checking to see whether this practice is still being used by your mobile operator.

As late as March 2011, voicemails of politicians in the Netherlands were exposed by the use of a default PIN.

This was one of the mechanisms allegedly used by the News of the World ‘phone hackers’ to get access to people’s voicemails without their knowledge.

If you’d never setup a PIN, the attackers would get in via well publicised default PINs.

If they came up against someone who was using their own PIN, they would then use social engineering techniques to trick the operator into resetting the PIN to the default.

This seems pretty likely as a lot of celebrities' phones are looked after by personal assistants, not the celebrity themselves so it could look fairly legitimate to call up the PA.

More homework: Call your own mobile phone number. While you’re listening to the bit where it asks you to leave a message, press the * (star) key.

You should then be brought to your own voicemail menu! The system should ask you to enter a PIN. Follow the same process as above and see what happens.

Notifications

One of the security measures that have been introduced is to notify the customer more often by SMS when something goes on that they should know about.

Remember that if a third-party was accessing your voicemails remotely, you as a customer wouldn’t normally get to know that anyone had been there. In some cases, the attackers deleted the voicemails.

The type of notifications you could get could tell you that there has been a remote access to your voicemail, that there was an invalid PIN code attempt or that your voicemail PIN has been changed – all useful bits of information!

This is something that has been borrowed from the banking industry. It is a simple, effective early warning mechanism that something could be wrong. Because it shouldn’t happen very often, you shouldn’t be plagued by messages, equally you are the best person to know if it is dodgy activity or not.

However, always be careful with any message you receive. The best thing to do if you are unsure is to ring the customer helpline of your operator who’ll be able to tell you whether the message is genuine.

The methods for doing this are continually evolving.

Some of the newer methods involve faking a phone’s displayed number so it can trick access to voicemail. This technique has been used in the USA and recently in the Netherlands to get access to the voicemails of politicians.

To block this attack, you need to setup a PIN to access your voicemail. By doing this you prevent automatic access to your voicemail (as if you were ringing from your own mobile).

Summary

You now know how it works and you’ve been able to check whether you’re properly protected and set your own PIN number up. The customer service websites of operators should also be able to give you some good advice on PIN security and their voicemail service.

Remember that with all the publicity around the issue, it’s not only the operators who are reacting to the revelations; there will be bad people out there who are only now starting to exploit illicit voicemail access. Don’t let yourself be a victim.

What happens next?

Well, customer use of voicemail technology has evolved a lot, even in the last five years with the result that habits are changing. That is why I am asking the network operators to look at the use of remote voicemail access in general, with the proposal that they should consider shutting remote access down entirely.

sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5102069488082505221.post-70026762534603928122011-12-16T23:49:00.000-08:002011-12-16T23:49:24.028-08:00Samsung mobile Service Codes

Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced with about 5%
Enhanced Full Rate will give you much better sound quality when you enable it. The new Enhanced Full Rate CODEC adopted by GSM uses the ASELP (Algebraic Code Excitation Linear Prediction) compression technology. This technology allows for much great voice quality in the same number of bits as the older Full Rate CODEC. The older technology was called LPC-RPE (Linear Prediction Coding with Regular Pulse Excitation). Both operate at 13 kilobits.(but you take up more space on the network, so they can charge you more) - Talk-time is reduced by about 5% when using the ERF option.
Self powered – the phone derives its energy/power from the sun, water, or air.
Sense the environment – the phone will tell you the weather, the amount of air pollution present, etc.
Flexible – bend but not break
Transparent – “see through” phones
Nokia says its possible. Through the use of Nanotechnology.
Nokia together with the University of Cambridge (UK), has developed this concept calledMorph.
Like batteries, fuel cells are electrochemical energy conversion devices that produce electricity. By converting hydrogen and oxygen into water, they can be a valuable power source for vehicles, buildings and devices like laptops and cell phones.
Wang’s research is aimed at developing new materials and structures for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, which are considered the best type of fuel cell for vehicles, and are predicted to eventually replace gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines.
PEM fuel cells use a solid polymer membrane, or thin plastic film, that is permeable to protons when saturated with water. However, water present in the fuel cell could repeatedly freeze and melt while operating in cold climates, forcing the cell to expand and contract, and causing stress and deterioration of the membrane.
Wang’s research focuses on improving fuel cell membrane durability through the development of robust materials that can withstand stress due to temperature change, which is a major challenge for the commercial deployment of automotive fuel cells.
He works with graduate and undergraduate students in the Fuel Cell Research Laboratory to create novel materials and structures for PEM fuel cells targeted at improving durability, reducing cost and increasing fuel cell performance.
They have successfully developed membranes with improved durability based on polymer and carbon nanotube composite materials that exhibit high stress tolerance during freeze-thaw cycling.
Wang is advised by Suresh G. Advani, George W. Laird Professor of Mechanical Engineering and associate director of the Center for Composite Materials, and Ajay K. Prasad, professor of mechanical engineering and director of the Center for Fuel Cell Research.
These devices will be fully integrated with silicon microchips to enable a new generation of high performance portable communication systems. Eventually the fruits of this project could result in enabling a variety of mobile technologies with much higher data communication rates.

Diamond is the hardest known substance on earth. In addition, since diamond is both stiff and light, it can be used to produce tuning fork devices (tiny diving board-like structures which oscillate at high frequencies to receive and transmit signals) that vibrate at frequencies higher than similar devices of the same dimensions made of other materials—up to 100,000,000,000 times per second for diamond tuning folks that are around 100 nanometers in size. Such high frequency structures can be used as key electrical elements in cell phones, enabling them to operate at much higher frequencies. The challenge is to manufacture diamond tuning forks reliably and affordably enough for them to be widely adopted in broadband communication devices.

The four partners in the research project each bring particular expertise to the effort. Argonne provides the worldwide leading fundamental and applied science on the patented UNCD film technology developed over the last 14 years. Advanced Diamond Technologies, Inc. (ADT), a spin-off company from Argonne, is developing UNCD thin films for a number of applications, including the deposition of low-temperature films on large-area (200 mm) silicon wafers that is critical to the success of the current program. Innovative Micro Technology (IMT) has the largest and best-equipped independent MEMS fabrication facility in the world and provides MEMS services from design through production. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has advanced microfabrication facilities at the Wisconsin Center for Applied Microelectronics, and provides novel atomic force microscopy tools to characterize UNCD-based MEMS device performance. The DARPA Phase II program is funded at $1,400,000 for 12 months.

“The UNCD technology developed and patented at Argonne, and transferred to ADT for commercialization, provides the basis for a new generation of commercial MEMS devices,” said Orlando Auciello, Argonne Senior Scientist and Principal Investigator of the DARPA-funded program. “UNCD exhibits exceptional mechanical and low surface friction properties that are far superior to the current silicon materials used in most MEMS devices. The team has already discovered in a Phase I of the project that UNCD exhibits the highest known acoustic velocity, which directly translates to high resonator frequencies. Both the frequency and the quality factor of these resonators are unaffected by environmental exposure, which are key requirements for real MEMS devices. The funding from DARPA is key to the challenging undertaking of developing a whole new MEMS technology based on the novel UNCD material.

sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5102069488082505221.post-47397503060379780272011-12-13T02:45:00.000-08:002011-12-13T02:45:02.964-08:00Scale Back Huawei Business in Iran

Chinese telecommunications- equipment maker Huawei Technologies Co. said it will scale back its business in Iran, where the company provides services to government-controlled telecom operators, following reports that Iranian police were using mobile-network technology to track down and arrest dissidents.

Shenzhen-based Huawei will "voluntarily restrict its business development there by no longer seeking new customers and limiting its business activities with existing customers," according to a statement Friday on the company's website. It said the company was making the move due to the "increasingly complex situation in Iran." Company spokesmen declined to elaborate.
The action follows a front-page Wall Street Journal article in October that documented how Huawei's business grew in Iran following a pullback by Western companies after the government's bloody crackdown on its citizens two years ago. Iranian human-rights groups outside Iran say there are dozens of documented cases in which dissidents were traced and arrested through the government's ability to track the location of their cellphones—technology for which Huawei has provided support.

Activists hailed the company's decision, noting it was the first time a major Chinese company had decided to scale back its business in Iran. Until now, Iran has viewed its partnership with Chinese companies as a solid alternative to Western contracts.

"This is a significant milestone," said Mark Wallace, president of United Against Nuclear Iran and a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "For the first time a major Chinese business is pulling back from Iran in the face of mounting international scorn for Iran's brutal regime." The New York-based group had been pressuring Huawei to leave Iran and had been communicating privately with the company for several weeks.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department said it welcomed Huawei's announcement, adding that the U.S. "calls on all firms to exercise vigilance when doing business with Iran and ensure that any business does not contribute to the Government of Iran's ability to repress its own people."

Reuters
U.S. regulators have blocked Huawei's bids on major telecommunications infrastructure projects as well as acquisitions of American companies over security concerns.

Executives at Huawei's highest levels have been discussing for months whether to scale back in Iran, according to people familiar with the matter. Those discussions gained in intensity in recent weeks, particularly after the Journal article, several people said. The rapidly growing, private company was founded in 1987 by its chief executive, Ren Zhengfei, a former officer in China's People's Liberation Army.

Some Huawei executives in Shenzhen see operations in Iran as jeopardizing expansion opportunities in the U.S. and Europe, where the Chinese company has faced skepticism over its compliance procedures and dealings with countries that have pariah regimes. That was a driving factor behind the decision to dial back operations in Iran, a person familiar with the matter said.

The Chinese company has held talks with consultants, lawyers and lobbyists from the U.S. on the issue.

Mahmoud Tadjallimehr, a former Huawei employee in Germany who also has worked as a telecommunications consultant in Iran, cautioned that Huawei needs to be monitored. "We have to keep watching them to see if they will really implement the measures they say," he said.

Huawei, which has about 1,000 employees in Iran, said it plans to continue servicing its existing Iranian contracts. "For communications networks that have been delivered or are under delivery to customers, Huawei will continue to provide necessary services to ensure communications for Iran's citizens," the company statement said.

The size of Huawei's business in Iran remains unclear and tracking it is difficult, in part because it sometimes works through a Hong Kong-registered company with a different name—Skycom Tech Co. Ltd. Employees of Huawei and Skycom say the companies are closely affiliated, although William Plummer, Huawei's vice president of external affairs in Washington, said Huawei doesn't "have any investment" in Skycom. He said Huawei "had some cooperation with them in the past on commercial projects."

As 2011 draws to a close Juniper Research has drawn up a list of predictions for the coming year, all neatly wrapped up as the top trends for the mobile and wireless industry for 2012. A complimentary report detailing the findings is available to download from the Juniper website today.
Recession Likely to Hit Smart Device Sales
There is a strong possibility that recessionary conditions will have an adverse impact on smartphone and tablet sales, particularly in the case of unsubsidised devices. Juniper’s view is that, given the extent to which smartphones have already become a near “must-have” device, the impact here will be less significant than for tablets, where it may well reduce the extent to which these devices penetrate the wider market, notably across Western Europe. The effect will be most acutely felt in the premium tablet sector, where net device sales could plateau or even decline.
Conversely, the reduction in average purchasing power could conceivably benefit players such as Amazon and ARCHOS, inasmuch as cash-strapped consumers may opt for the lower-priced Kindle Fire or an ARNOVA-branded device rather than the iPad.
Top Ten Wireless Predictions for 2012
Google seems to have accidentally given users a preview of an upcoming Gmail redesign.

Analysts say the changes could be part of a move to get the email service ready to be integrated with Google+.

On Thursday, the company posted a video announcement on its YouTube channel, touting the new features added to Google's popular, free email service. However, the video was quickly pulled, but not before a few people copied and reposted it.

"We've been hard at work to update Gmail with a new look," said Jason Cornwell, a Google user interface designer, in the video. "We've completely redesigned the look and feel of Gmail to make it as clean, simple and intuitive as possible."

Google hasn't said when the redesign will be launched. "Oops, you weren't supposed to see that," said Andrea Freund, a spokeswoman for Google, in an email to Computerworld. "Stay tuned. We'll be sharing more info on Gmail's new look soon."

In the video, Cornwell describes the added ability for users to customize several aspects of their Gmail experience, including the size of the chat area, how densely conversations are stacked, and Gmail search. Google also has added imagery and profile pictures for chat sessions.

Since Gmail is arguably the centerpiece of Google Apps, it's cloud-based suite of office applications, it could be that Google is getting its email service ready to be integrated with Google+.

"I think email usage has peaked and people will use social media more -- Twitter, Facebook messages, Google+," said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst at ZK Research. "So for Google, if they can customize [Gmail] and make it more modular, it makes taking portions of Gmail and moving [them] to Google+ easier."

This week, Vic Gundotra, a Google engineering senior vice president, told an audience at the Web 2.0 Summit that Google+, the company's new social network, soon will be integrated with Google Apps.

And earlier this month, Google CEO Larry Page said he will use Google+ to transform the whole company.

Kerravala said he thinks Google is getting ready to integrate its email service with its social networking service.

"With Facebook, you just pop in and out of it," he added. "If they integrate Google+ and Gmail, then Google becomes the place to go to start your day, and you stay in it all day."

In July, Google began to roll out other redesign changes to Gmail. In that design update, Cornwell said the overhaul was part of a "Google-wide effort" to give all of its services a consistent look.

Ezra Gottheil, an analyst with Technology Business Research, said in a previous interview that linking its services and giving them a unified look is a smart move for Google.

"A consistent look is essential for branding," he said this summer. "People should know they're on a Google property. Even someone glancing at someone else's screen should know they're on a Google property. It may be that Google+ was just the first view of the new look."
sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5102069488082505221.post-38161727370957203232011-12-11T09:06:00.000-08:002011-12-11T09:06:12.107-08:00Google+ will crush everyone with 'featurization'

I finally understand Google's überstrategy for dominating the future of online everything.

Here it is: Coalesce all of its best products into a single super product that marginalizes smaller rivals to the point of irrelevance and clobbers Facebook with total superiority.

That single super product is Google+.

Why features beat products

The most important distinction in Silicon Valley is this: Is it a product or a feature?

Why Google+ will become Google's only product
Google unveils 'Find My Face' tool for Google+
Is Google+ or Facebook better for business?
Google+ comes to the enterprise via Google Apps
Privacy a concern as Google links Plus with its other sites
Google readies Google+ for push into the enterprise
Google slips a sneak peak at Gmail redesign
Google's Schmidt (finally) takes to Google+
Elgan: Easy automation for Google+
Continuing coverage: Google+
Venture capitalists have to be experts in this distinction, because an IT tool that can't stand on its own as a viable, marketable product usually isn't worth investing in.

Digital cameras were among the hottest categories of consumer electronics gadgets from the late 90s until fairly recently. A point-and-shoot, pocket-size digital camera was a hot product.

But now it's transitioning from a product to a feature -- of cellphones. Mainstream smartphones like the iPhone 4S and the HTC Evo 4G have 8-megapixel cameras, quality optics and HD video capability. People who have smartphones already have decent cameras. That's why sales of point-and-shoot digital cameras are plateauing and will inevitably decline over the next few years.

Here's another example: In the 1990s, zip file-compression utilities were a major part of the software industry. People used to pay for them.

But in 1998, Microsoft made zip support a feature of Windows. And in 2004, Apple made zip a feature of Mac OS X.

Zip compression has been marginalized as a product. You don't see a lot of startups wanting to get into the zip racket.

People used to seek out and download instant messaging applications like PowWow, ICQ and AOL Instant Messenger. IM was a serious product category.

Today, chat has become a feature of Facebook, Gmail, Android and the iPhone. IM has been marginalized as a discrete product category.

Once something is a successful feature, it can usually no longer thrive as a product.

And that's how Google plans to dominate the future of the Internet. Many of the product categories for online services will be marginalized as Google makes these technologies mere features of Google+.

How Google products become Google+ features

Google+ launched as an invitation-only "project" on June 28 -- just five and a half months ago. It opened to the public Sept. 20 -- less than three months ago.

From the beginning, Google+ had already integrated features that were available elsewhere as products. Hangouts, for example, offers most of the functionality of Skype. Google+ also came integrated with Picasa, a photo management service that Google acquired in 2004. Google+ also incorporated, to some degree, Google's Gmail application, as well as chat. The Sparks feature represented a partial integration of Google News.

But since the launch, Google has "integrated" a dozen more major products into Google+, turning them into de facto features. This process starts with a minor integration and evolves into a major one.

The +1 button, which preceded Google+, was integrated into the service Aug. 24. When you find a +1 button on any website, clicking it offers a share box for publishing a link on Google+. These +1 shares are called "Snippets" by Google.
The reason was to support games that benefit from having two sticks. Why Nintendo didn’t ship the 3DS with two sticks as standard we’ll never know.

What you may not have realized is the stick peripheral, thought to be called the Circle Pad Pro or Slide Pad, requires power in the form of a single AAA battery. So as well as recharging your 3DS battery, you also need to keep a supply of AAA batteries on hand for the peripheral. The need for another battery isn’t as big of a frustration as it sounds when you hear how long the battery life is for the Circle Pad Pro.

The peripheral isn’t meant to hit store shelves in Japan until tomorrow, but a few have been picked up early. According to the manual included in the packaging, the estimated battery life is 480 hours. In other words, it really isn’t going to be a hassle. One pack of AAA batteries may last the lifetime of your 3DS unless you’re a really heavy user.

Such a long battery life looks to be a blessing. If you check out the image of the peripheral above, it appears you need a screwdriver in order to get the battery cover open. I’m also a bit taken aback as to how big and clunky the clip-on plastic housing looks. You certainly won’t be fitting your 3DS in a standard case once this is attached.
sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5102069488082505221.post-45728745275687694472011-12-10T08:11:00.000-08:002011-12-10T08:11:12.216-08:00T-Mobile offers free Square card readers with a phone contract

Square is all about making businesses more mobile, and that’s something you can figure out simply by looking at the companies lone hardware product — the Square Card Reader. The tiny device pairs with Square’s app to process credit card transactions on a smartphone. Earlier this year, Square got a major boost when Apple decided to carry its hardware in retail stores. Now, they’re getting a little help from the folks at T-Mobile.

T-Mo is encouraging business users to upgrade their phones to a brand new, super-speedy 4G model like the Samsung Galaxy S2 or HTC Amaze. To sweeten the deal — or at least take some of the sting off of the two-year, $70 per month contract — they’re offering up a free Square reader.

A new phone and no-cost payment processing hardware does sound like a pretty good deal, but it’s worth knowing that you don’t have to stick with T-Mobile just to get in on the action. See, Square gives the reader away for free anyway right on their website. All you have to do is sign up for their payment processing service, provide your shipping address, and you’re good to go. You can then dust off your copy of A Christmas Story and make believe you’re Ralphie waiting for the mailman to deliver your super-secret decoder ring.

But even though the reader deal from T-Mobile isn’t necessarily an amazing deal for business users, it’s an undeniably good thing for Square. It’s the first time they’ve been promoted by a carrier, and should help Square add new customers and bump up their $11 million-per-day payment processing volume.
sarathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15236374072031447758noreply@blogger.com0
